Ok in this video we are looking at the basic structure of atoms. In junior school you learnt the following structure:



This is an ok model as it describes atoms being made up of 3 subatomic particles:

  • protons (positive charge) and located in the nucleus
  • neutrons (neutral in charge) and located in the nucleus
  • electrons (negative in charge) and located outside the nucleus in regions we call electron shells.


This model is a good start, but has its limitations. We will start with this and extend it in the next few videos.
